THE AFRICAN BLACK SOAP WONDERS

The African Black soap wonders!!! I so much love this soap, the feel and lathering capacity is awesome. Soap is an essential cleansing material needed by every family for cleansing. It is produced by saponification or basic hydrolysis reaction of the fat or oil. Three main ingredients involved in soap making are oil or fat, lye (or alkali) and water. You may add other ingredients to give good appearance, pleasant odour and assurance of longevity.

The Traditional black soap possesses different names depending on the region of the continent. Traditional black soap has several popular names in the Western part of Africa, such as ʽAnago Soapʼ or ʽAlata Simenaʼ in Ghana. In Nigeria, the traditional black soap is called ʽSabilum-saloʼ by the Hausas, ʽOse duduʼ or ʽabuweʼ by the Yorubas and ʽNcha-Nkotaʼ by the Igbos.

Plants used in soap making include: Elaeis guineensis, Theobroma cacao, Vitellaria paradoxa, Cocos nucifera Gossypium hirsutum, Persea americana, Helianthus annuus etc. Many agricultural wastes you can use for soap making are present in homes and littered all over the environment. These materials include cocoa pod, palm bunch, plantain peels, cassava peels, maize cobs and others.

The use of plants in soap making is preferable rather than the use of synthetic substances/chemicals. This is due to the fact that there is a higher toxicity level in chemicals than plant extracts. We call it the traditional black soap due to its combination of Water, Roasted Plantain Skin or Cocoa Pod, Palm Oil, Palm Kernel Oil or Shea Butter. There are no chemical added as preservative or colour enhancers, this is the unique feature of black soap.

Black soap was introduced in Ghana from Nigeria many years ago by the Yoruba traders doing business in Ghana. African black soap is a soft soap which is made using natural lye that is found in ash and charcoal of locally ethically harvest African plants. This explains why African black soap possesses a dark colour. The colour varies from a light brown to a deep black, depending on the ingredients and method of preparation.

Each type is greatly dependent on the region of production, each region belonging to a particular tribe. The tribe therefore determines the various ingredients in the soap as each tribe has different importance they believe the soap has. Sabilum salo is a special form of African black soap mainly in the Northern part of Nigeria. This type does not contain artificial caustic soda, perfume, colour and any other additives used in the production of African black soap. The African Black soap wonder is therefore slightly dependent on the region of production.
