Shower Mistakes That Could Ruin Your Skin
It’s not a new thing knowing the average individual showers for at least twice a day. We see having a shower as an important act in personal hygiene and it seems so easy and enjoyable you may get carried away with those little shower mistakes that could ruin your skin. A whole lot could go wrong within the 5-10 minutes you spend taking a shower.
By now you should know that your skin is the largest organ of your body. This is why skincare must neither be overlooked nor under-emphasized. It’s not just about soaping, lathering, rinsing, and luxuriating. They may be doing some damages to your skin if not done properly. Lets take a look at some shower mistakes which could ruin your skin:
Blasting your skin with hot water
That awesome feeling of hot water on your skin, relieving your stressed muscles, causing you to sleep deeply and making you feel as though your body weight reduced by ½. Spoiler alert!!!!!! Hot water causes your skin to dry by absorbing all the natural oils contained in it. This leaves you with a dry skin – a skin type very prone to acne. The worst kind of hot water bath is that which takes a long period of time. It’s therefore advisable that you reduce the temperature of the water with which you shower or you shower for a short period of time – 5-10 minutes.
Use of harsh Soaps
It’s no new thing that anti-microbial soaps are very effective in eliminating bacteria and dirt from skin pores. The use of harsh type of soap while taking a shower could ruin your skin. They also strip your skin of the beneficial natural ingredients contained in it.
It’s possible that antibacterial soaps are more effective on your hands than other parts of the body, this is because there are different skin textures and skin types in the different parts of the body, making the use of these antibacterial – harsh soaps less suitable for all over cleansing. I do discourage the use of bar soaps in taking a shower. This is because from sitting in a wet or damp area which is not brightly lit, they tend easily accumulate bacteria.
Over-scrubbing
Over-scrubbing your body is a very common shower mistake that could ruin your skin. Do not confuse scrubbing with exfoliating, they mean two different things. Over-scrubbing removes the healthy skin cells and leave fresh skin patches, giving the skin access to bacteria. It is therefore advisable you use mild loofahs and exfoliate at most, twice a week.
Heavily soaping your whole body
Soaps have a characteristic of absorbing the oil in the skin, thereby causing dryness – especially if used with hot water. The limbs – arms and legs do not contain a lot of oil and using soaps at these places will further provide a dry skin. Properly soap oily parts of your body and use a minimum amount of soap on the limbs and places that cause odour such as the armpits, feet, groin and buttocks.
Not moisturizing immediately
I consider moisturizing as the last stage of taking a shower. This is because what gives a shower an effective result is the act of moisturizing immediately – on a semi-moist skin. It helps combat dry skin. After a shower, water quickly evaporates from the skin, leaving it dry. It is therefore important you moisturize immediately after taking a shower so as to trap water in your skin, keeping it moist.
Prolonged showers
Prolonged showering or baths often dries up your skin. It could cause dry, itchy and sometimes cracked skin. Bacteria may enter through the crack on the skin. According to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Edidiong Kaminska, MD, the recommended maximum shower time is about 5 to 10 minutes. “Our skin needs water, just like our bodies, but if we over- or under-do it, then it may have consequences,” she adds. If you have dry skin or eczema, Dr. Anna Guanche, MD, FAAD, says shorter, lukewarm showers are recommended.
